Bruce Levine is the J. G. Randall Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign specializing in the Civil War era. Prior to this, he served as professor of history at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His books include Half Slave and Half Free: The Roots of the Civil War (1992, 2005) and Confederate Emancipation: Southern Plans to Free and Arm Slaves during the Civil War (2005).
